On May 5th, 1995 something extraordinary happened to Dr. Gloria Polo Ortiz;

She was taking shelter from a storm with her nephew, when both of them were struck by lightning. What happened to her afterwards was a miracle which led to her conversion and a life of abandonment to the will of God.

She now tells her story in many different countries around the world, and has the approval of her diocese in Bogota, Colombia, and her spiritual director.

Her testimony is an inspiration for all of us, and will increase our faith in Christ Jesus and His Holy Catholic Church.

About the Author

Dr. Gloria Polo, a dentist from Bogota, Columbia was raised in the Catholic faith, but later fell away and became involved in many things that were contrary to the faith and God’s commandments. She would often lie to her mother saying, “If I am lying to you, let me be struck by lightning.”

On May 5th, 1995 Dr. Polo was indeed struck by lightning. After being struck by lightning, her soul left her body. Finding herself on the precipice of hell she experienced God’s judgment, His mercy, and her conversion.

God gives me the mission telling me: “You will repeat your testimony not only 1.000 times, but also you will repeat it thousand times thousand of times! And woe of those who don’t change their ways despite having heard you, because they will be judged much more severely, just like you will when you come back here again, even their anointed or their priests, or any of them, because the worst deafness is that of a man who refuses to hear.”

       Dr. Gloria Constanza Polo

While suspended above Hell, God questions Gloria about the 10 Commandments, asking her if she knew them and if she broke any of them.

The Sixth Commandment: Adultery

On this commandment I thought, still full of pride: here they will not catch me in fault, because I never had a lover, I was always faithful! As a matter of fact, after matrimony, I never even gave a kiss to others, only to my husband. But the Lord showed me that I exhibited too much of my body, when I went around with my breasts exposed, with the skintight stockings, with the cloths that I used… I thought that men looked at me, simply to admire me… But the Lord showed me how they sinned with me: because we are not dealing with admiration, as I believed, but with provocation, and they were provoked due to me. I committed adultery, for having exhibited my body. I did not understand the male sensibility. I believed that they thought like me, that looking at me they would say: “What a nice body!” Instead they sinned due to my fault. Never was I unfaithful for having thrown myself into the arms of a man, but it was as if I was a prostitute in spirit. More than everything, I thought to vindicate myself, if my husband might had been unfaithful to me, and I counseled other women to do so, when they discovered that the husband had betrayed them. “Do not be a fool! Vindicate yourself, do not forgive. Show your worth! It is for this that we women are so put down by men, so trampled on!” You know, with these counsels, I and my girlfriends succeeded in separating one of our girlfriends. She had surprised the husband in the office while he was kissing the secretary. We, with our counsels, did not let her reconcile, even though he asked her for pardon, truly repentant. She even wanted to forgive, because she loved him: but we did not permit forgiveness to him. In the end they got divorced, and two years later she got married civilly, with an argentine. Do you understand? When I counseled in this way, I was inside an adulterer. Jesus showed me, and I saw well, how sins of the flesh are abominable, because the person condemns himself, even if the world affirms that all is well. In all my life I had only one man, my husband; but the sins are also in the thoughts, in the words, in the actions: it was very sad to see how the sin and the adultery of my father did so much harm to us. In my case, it transformed me into a resentful person; I sunk into rancor against men, while my brothers became faithful copies of my father. Do they think to be happy in feeling themselves very masculine? They are womanizers, they drink, and they do not realize the evil that they do to their own children. For this my father was crying with great suffering, in Purgatory, seeing the consequences of his sin and of his example that he gave them. We condemn ourselves, with promiscuity, because it is to live as if we were animals: mice, dogs… here and there…

St. Frances of Rome Saw the Tortures the Impure Souls Endured in Hell

In the life of Saint Frances of Rome, we read of a vision of Hell which was granted her, and which lasted for four hours.  God willed to show her, in the fires of Hell, certain ladies whom she had known in Roman society.  For what sins had these souls been damned?  They had been damned:

for guilty desires, even though these had not been put into act.

for indecent styles of dress, which were the fashion of the day, and which had been a cause of seduction and of sin.

for dances, considered inoffensive by the world.

This vision of Hell so marked Saint Frances of Rome, that she had it painted on the murals of her chapel, as a constant reminder of the judgments of God.  God then gave her the mission of drawing the Roman ladies out of their luxury and their vanity.

Following the visit in Hell, she wrote a book where she recounts what she saw. This treatise gives us much information about hell. Here are excerpts from Chapter II, titled, “Tortures exercised on nine kinds of sinners” :

Torture of those who have offended nature by their impurities

Frances saw in hell’s lowest and most horrible section men and women who were submitted to horrible tortures. The demons who were their torturers would have them sit on steel bars, reddened by fire that penetrated their body lengthwise and exited through the top of the head. Whole one demon fulled the bar out and inserted it anew, other demons using burning snips cut through their fresh from head to toe. These tortures were unceasing, not to mention other treatments such as fire, freezing cold, deep darkness, blasphemies and gnashing of teeth.

PRAY! Pray for the souls who have no one to pray for them! The world is saturated in impurity of the most diabolical! Blessed Mother, cover us with your mantle!

The Apparition of Our Lady of Good Success

COPIED FROM TFP.ORG

“In those times the atmosphere will be saturated with the spirit of impurity which, like a filthy sea, will engulf the streets and public places with incredible license.… Innocence will scarcely be found in children, or modesty in women.” — Our Lady of Good Success

During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Our Lady of Good Success appeared in Quito, Ecuador to a Spanish nun whose little-known but extraordinary life has a direct connection with our days.

The Pope’s “infallibility will be declared a dogma of Faith by the same Pope chosen to proclaim the dogma of the mystery of my Immaculate Conception. He will be persecuted and imprisoned in the Vatican through the usurpation of the Pontifical States and through the malice, envy, and avarice of an earthly monarch.”

“Unbridled passions will give way to a total corruption of customs because Satan will reign through the Masonic sects, targeting the children in particular to insure general corruption

“Unhappy, the children of those times! Seldom will they receive the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. As for the sacrament of Penance, they will confess only while attending Catholic schools, which the devil will do his utmost to destroy by means of persons in authority.

“The same will occur with Holy Communion. Oh, how it hurts me to tell you that there will be many and enormous public and hidden sacrileges!

“In those times, the sacrament of Extreme Unction will be largely ignored.… Many will die without receiving it, being thereby deprived of innumerable graces, consolation, and strength in the great leap from time to eternity.

“The sacrament of Matrimony, which symbolizes the union of Christ with the Church, will be thoroughly attacked and profaned. Masonry, then reigning, will implement iniquitous laws aimed at extinguishing this sacrament. They will make it easy for all to live in sin, thus multiplying the birth of illegitimate children without the Church’s blessing….

“Secular education will contribute to a scarcity of priestly and religious vocations.”

“The holy sacrament of Holy Orders will be ridiculed, oppressed, and despised, for in this both the Church and God Himself are oppressed and reviled, since He is represented by His priests.

“The devil will work to persecute the ministers of the Lord in every way, working with baneful cunning to destroy the spirit of their vocation and corrupting many. Those who will thus scandalize the Christian flock will bring upon all priests the hatred of bad Christians and the enemies of the One, Holy, Roman Catholic, and Apostolic Church. This apparent triumph of Satan will cause enormous suffering to the good pastors of the Church…and to the Supreme Pastor and Vicar of Christ on earth who, a prisoner in the Vatican, will shed secret and bitter tears in the presence of God Our Lord, asking for light, sanctity, and perfection for all the clergy of the world, to whom he is King and Father.”

“Unhappy times will come wherein those who should fearlessly defend the rights of the Church will instead, blinded despite the light, give their hand to the Church’s enemies and do their bidding. But when [evil] seems triumphant and when authority abuses its power, committing all manner of injustice and oppressing the weak, their ruin shall be near. They will fall and crash to the ground.

“At the end of the nineteenth century and throughout a great part of the twentieth, many heresies will be propagated in these lands.…“Then will the Church, joyful and triumphant like a young girl, reawaken and be comfortably cradled in the arms of my most dear and elect son of those times. If he lends an ear to the inspirations of grace–one of which will be the reading of these great mercies that my Son and I have had toward you–we shall fill him with graces and very special gifts and will make him great on earth and much greater in Heaven. There we have reserved a precious seat for him because, heedless of men, he will have fought for truth and ceaselessly defended the rights of the Church, deserving to be called ‘martyr.’”

“The small number of souls who will secretly safeguard the treasure of Faith and virtues will suffer a cruel, unspeakable, and long martyrdom. Many will descend to their graves through the violence of suffering and will be counted among the martyrs who sacrificed themselves for the country and the Church.

“To be delivered from the slavery of these heresies, those whom the merciful love of my Son has destined for this restoration will need great will-power, perseverance, courage, and confidence in God. To try the faith and trust of these just ones, there will be times when all will seem lost and paralyzed. It will then be the happy beginning of the complete restoration….

“In those times the atmosphere will be saturated with the spirit of impurity which, like a filthy sea, will engulf the streets and public places with incredible license.… Innocence will scarcely be found in children, or modesty in women.

“He who should speak seasonably will remain silent.

“There shall be scarcely any virgin souls in the world. The delicate flower of virginity will seek refuge in the cloisters.…Without virginity, fire from heaven will be needed to purify these lands.…

“Sects, having permeated all social classes, will find ways of introducing themselves into the very heart of homes to corrupt the innocence of children. The children’s hearts will be dainty morsels to regale the devil.…

“Religious communities will remain to sustain the Church and work with courage for the salvation of souls.… The secular clergy will fall far short of what is expected of them because they will not pursue their sacred duty. Losing the divine compass, they will stray from the way of priestly ministry mapped out for them by God and will become devoted to money, seeking it too earnestly.

“Pray constantly, implore tirelessly, and weep bitter tears in the seclusion of your heart, beseeching the Eucharistic Heart of my most holy Son to take pity on His ministers and to end as soon as possible these unhappy times by sending to His Church the Prelate who shall restore the spirit of her priests.”

“My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge, and the way that will lead you to God.”
The Message of Our Lady of Fatima (Selections)
(Fatima, Portugal, 1917)
By Dom Augustine Marie, OSB
Edited and Notes by Br Sean, OSsS

“I am the Lady of the Rosary, I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and ask
for pardon for their sins. They must not offend Our Lord any more, for He is already too
grievously offended by the sins of men. People must say the Rosary. Let them continue
saying it every day.”
Our Lady gravely said, “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners and say often, especially when you
make some sacrifice, ‛O my Jesus, this is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and
in reparation for the offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’ ”

On July 13, 1917 the Blessed Virgin unveiled a terrifying reality before the three children’s
eyes. Lucia recounts: “Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire, which seemed to be under
the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls, in human form, like transparent
burning embers, all blackened or burnished bronze, floating about in this conflagration in
clouds of smoke, lifted by flames coming out of their bodies. They rose and fell on all
sides, like sparks in roaring fires, without weight or direction, amid shrieks and groans of
pain and despair that terrified us and made us tremble with fear. The demons could be
distinguished by their terrifying and repellent likeness to frightful and unknown animals,
black and transparent like burning coals. This vision lasted but a moment, thanks to our
good Mother from Heaven who had warned us beforehand, and promised to take us to
Heaven. Otherwise, I think we would have died of horror and fear. Then we raised our eyes
to Our Lady, who said with kindness and sadness: ‘You have seen Hell, where the souls of
poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to My
Immaculate Heart. If people do what I am going to tell you, many souls will be saved and
there will be peace.’ ”
Our Lady further said, “Pray, pray a great deal and make many sacrifices, for many souls
go to Hell because they have no one to make sacrifices and to pray for them.” (Fatima in
Lucia’s Own Words)
One more proof
The existence of Hell arouses disputes. Sister Lucia wrote, a few years before her death on
February 13, There is no shortage of unbelievers in the world who deny these truths, but
they are no less true for being denied. Their disbelief does not save unbelievers from the
horrors of Hell, should a life of sin lead them there. … At Fatima, (God) sent us His
Message as one more proof of these truths. This Message recalls them to us, so that we do
not let ourselves be fooled by the false doctrines of unbelievers who deny them, or of
deceivers who distort them. To this end, the Message assures us that Hell is a fact, and that
the souls of poor sinners end up there.” (Calls from the Message of Fatima, 2003, ch. 14)
The Blessed Virgin told them to keep this vision secret. She did not permit Lucia to reveal
it until 1941. Jacinta retained an impression of it which left a profound mark on her. From
this day on, she was very preoccupied with the fate of poor souls who went to Hell. She
often sat on the ground or on a rock, and, deep in thought, she would say, “Oh! Hell! How
sorrowful I am for the souls who are going to Hell!” Yet she did not confine herself to
futile pain but she prayed and sacrificed heroically for those who were in danger of being
lost.
A painful reality
The vision of Hell which the three children were favored with is not an exaggeration of the
reality it represented. It is a presentation of it within the grasp of the human mind. In 1992,
Lucia, who had been a Carmelite in Coïmbra, Portugal since 1948, told a Cardinal who had
come to visit her, “Hell is a reality… Continue to preach about Hell, for Our Lord Himself
spoke of Hell and it is in the Holy Scriptures. God condemns no one to Hell. People
condemn themselves to Hell. God has given mankind the freedom of choice, and He
respects this human freedom.»
Our Lady appeared to Jacinta several times between December 1919 and February 1920.
Our Lady told her many things including:
“The sins of the world are very great … If men only knew what eternity is, they would
do everything in their power to change their lives.”
“Fly from riches and luxury; love poverty and silence; have charity, even for bad
people.”
“More souls go to Hell because of sins of the flesh than for any other reason.”[1]
“Certain fashions will be introduced that will offend Our Lord very much.” “Woe to
women lacking in modesty.”[2]
“The Mother of God wants more virgin souls bound by the vow of chastity.”
“Confession is a sacrament of mercy and we must confess with joy and trust.”
“Many marriages are not of God and do not please Our Lord.”
“Our Lady can no longer uphold the arm of Her Divine Son which will strike the
world. If people amend their lives, Our Lord will even now save the world, but if they
do not, punishment will come.” “People must renounce sin and not persist in it, as has
been done until now. It is essential to repent greatly.”
“Tell everybody that God gives graces through the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Tell
them to ask graces from Her and that the Heart of Jesus wishes to be venerated
together with the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Ask them to plead for peace from the
Immaculate Heart of Mary, for the Lord has confided the peace of the world to Her.”
The vision of hell was shown at the beginning of this century to impress upon men and to
confirm the doctrine of Hell; thereby influencing man to stop offending God by sin. Of the
three children who saw hell, Jacinta was the most affected by this vision. The following are
some of her words on hell.
“Oh, Hell! Oh, Hell!” “Mother of God have pity on those who do not amend their lives.” “If
men only know what awaits them in eternity, they would do everything in their power to
change their lives.”
Often she would say to her brother, “Francisco, are you praying with me? We must pray
very much to save souls from hell, so many go there. So many!”
At times she would ask of Lucia, “Why doesn’t Our Lady show Hell to sinners? If only
they saw it, they would never commit sins again.”
Finally she said, “Look, I am going to heaven soon but you are to stay here. If Our Lady
lets you, tell everyone what hell is like so that they won’t sin anymore and not go there.”
Later Interview with Sr. Lucia on Hell
The following is a rare interview with Sister Lucia [the Fatima visionary who died in
2005], by Father Lombardi. It was recorded in the Vatican weekly “Osservatore della
Domenica” February 7, 1954.
Fr. Lombardi: “Tell me, is the ‘Better World Movement’ a response of the Church to the
words spoken to Our Lady?”
Lucia: “Father, there is certainly a great need for this renewal. If it is not done, and taking
into account the present development of humanity, only a limited number of the human
race will be saved.”
Fr. Lombardi: “Do you really believe that many will go to Hell? I hope that God will save
the greater part of humanity.” [He had just written a book entitled: Salvation for Those
Without Faith.]
Lucia: “Father, many will be lost.”
Fr. Lombardi: “It is true that the world is full of evil, but there is always a hope of
salvation.”
Lucia: “No Father, many will be lost.”
Father Lombardi remembered that Lucia had seen Hell and added: “Her words disturbed
me. I returned to Italy with that grave warning impressed on my heart.”[3]
The vision of hell was shown at the beginning of this century to impress upon men and to

The vision of hell was not revealed until 1941.
Our Lady at Fatima, during all six of her apparitions told the children they must pray,
especially the rosary. The three children responded generously to Our Lady’s requests.
What is keeping you from doing the same thing? Do not say, “I do not have the time!”
Because if you are too busy to spend time with God in prayer, then you are busier than God
intends you to be! Meditate upon the following words of Our Lord. “What does it profit a
man if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his own soul?”(Matt. 16:26)
Fatima Prayers (Prayers revealed to the Fatima visionaries by an angel and Our
Lady)
“O my God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love You. I ask pardon for those who do not
believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love You.”
“O Most Holy Trinity I adore You. My God, my God, I love You in the Most Blessed
Sacrament.”
“Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore Thee profoundly. I offer Thee the
most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the
Tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by
which He is offended. And by the infinite merits of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the
Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners.”
Our Lady gravely said, Sacrifice yourselves for sinners and say often, especially when you
make some sacrifice, ‛Jesus, this is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in
reparation for the offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’ ”
“When you say the Rosary, say after each mystery: ‘O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save
us from the fires of Hell; and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy
mercy’.”

Lucia of Fatima’s Reflections on Fashions

Calls from the Message of Fatima (also known as Appeals from the Message of Fatima) is a book written by Sister Lúcia of Fátima (O.C.D.), the last surviving seer of Virgin Mary apparitions in Cova da Iria, Fátima, Portugal.

Finding herself inundated with constantly repeated questions concerning the Marian apparitions occurred in Fátima, Portugal, and the visionaries, the message they received and the reason for some of the requests contained in that message, and feeling that it was beyond her to reply individually to each questioner, Sister Lúcia asked the Holy See for permission to write a text in which she could reply in general to the many questions that had been put to her. This permission was granted, hence the present work entitled in English language: “Calls” or “Appeals” from the Message of Fatima.

This book is, in effect, a long letter, written entirely by Sister Lúcia and addressed by her to all those who have written to her concerning their doubts, questions, and difficulties, and their desire for greater fidelity in living up to what was asked for from Heaven in the Cova da Iria.

We recommend reading the book in its entirety online here.

Would that the clothes people wear in our own day had even a touch of the modesty, the respect of human dignity, displayed by those worn by the village women of those days! It will be good for us to recall here what Sacred Scripture has to say on this subject. “Yahweh God gave the man this admonition. ‘You may eat indeed of all trees in the garden. Nevertheless of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you are not to eat, for on the day you eat of it you most surely will die. The woman saw that the tree was good to eat and pleasing to the eye… she took some of the fruit and ate it. She gave some also to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realized that they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together to make themselves loin cloths. (..) But Yahweh God called to man. ‘Where are you?’ he asked. ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden.’ he replied ‘I was afraid because I was naked so I hid.’ ‘Who told you that you were naked?’ he asked ‘Have you been eating of the tree I forbade you to eat?’ The man replied ‘It was the woman you put with me; she gave me the fruit, and I ate it’.

Then Yahweh God (..) to the man he said ‘Because you listened to the voice of your wife and ate from the tree from which I had forbidden you to eat (..) accursed be the soil because of you (..) It shall yield you brambles and thistles (..) With sweat on your brow shall you eat your bread, until you return to the soil, as you were taken from it. For dust you are and dust you shall return.’ Yahweh God made cloths out of skins for the man and his wife, and they put them on (Gen 2,16-17; 3,6-21).

This sacred text shows us the God covered the bodies that had stripped themselves, through sin, of the garment of grace. For this reason, we must all clothe ourselves decently, modestly and with dignity. Those who appear indecently dressed are an incentive to sin, and so are responsible not only for their own sins but also for those that others may commit because of them. Reflect that fashion, if it is indecent-and we see that the world unfortunately follows it as if it were a law-is a trick of the devil,a clever trap in which the devil catches souls, in the same way as hunters catch game in the woods and fields.

God did not give us clothing as an adornment in order to feed our human vanity and frivolity. No! He gave it to us as a protection against sin, as a sign of penance for sin committed, as a punishment for it, as well as to remind us of the laws of God which we are all obliged to obey.

Let us begin by examining how it is a sign of punishment and penance for sin committed and a protection against temptation. The sacred text tells us that, after they had sinned, Adam and Eve tried to cover themselves with fig leaves; but God did not think this was enough, because Sacred Scripture tells us, He ‘made clothes out of skins for the man and his wife, and they put them on’. (Gen 3,21)

Then follows a description of the punishment and the penance imposed on account of sin: Yahweh God expelled him from the garden of Eden, to till the soil from which he had been taken (Gen 3, 23) And this ‘until you return to the soil, as you were taken from it. For dust you are dust you shall return.’ (Gen 2, 17) Yes, your body will die because you sinned and transgressed the law of your God. But worse still, your soul will be lost forever unless you repent and do penance. You will die if you do not change your life, if you do not return to obeying the law of your God.

Notice however that it is not only for these two reasons-punishment and penance of our sins-that God clothes us; it served other purposes too. Besides being a protection against sin, the modest clothing with which we must cover ourselves is a distinguishing mark setting us apart in the stream of immorality and enabling us to be, for the world, true witnesses of Christ.

Clothing also serves to remind us of the laws of God, and of our serious obligation to obey them. God, in fact, asked his people to wear over their clothes concrete signs which would remind them of His Holy Commandments. ‘Speak to the people of Israel and bid them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put upon the tassel of each corner a cord of blue, and it shall be to you a tassel to look upon and remember all the commandments of the Lord, to do them, not to follow after your own heart and your own eyes, which you are inclined to go after wantonly. (Num . 15, 38-39)

Let us look at what God is saying here: ‘The tassels of your clothes will serve to remind you of the commandments of the Lord, to do them, not to follow after your own heart and your own eyes, which you are inclined to go after wantonly.’ Our clothes then, are to be protection for the eyes and the heart, so that we will not allow ourselves to be caught in the temptations of the flesh, the devil and the world. The tassels mentioned in the text undoubtedly envisage some kind of decoration on our clothing; but such decoration must be in accordance with modesty, with the dignity of the human person, with decency, in short, with morality, prompting us to observe the commandments of the Law of God.

Finally let us reflect on the expression God uses: ‘throughout generations’. This makes us think that God was not speaking for the salvation of the Israelites alone. What He said to them concerns us today, as it will concern those who come after us-not in the external form of the sign chosen which, naturally changes, but in the meaning and specific purpose we must not lose sight of, if we are to respect the order of things as God created them. Because the Law comes to us from God and does not change; it is immutable as He Himself is immutable.

Damned Souls Speak of God’s Displeasure in Immodesty in Dress”

Image result for Father Nieremberg
Fr. Juan Eusebio Nieremberg S.J.

“..Ah! If Christian women knew how much immodesty in dress displeases God!” At the same moment, this unhappy (damned) soul was pierced by two fiery lances, and plunged into a cauldron of liquid lead.

The Dogma of Hell by Rev. Schouppe, page 36

“We read also in Father Nieremberg that a noble lady, who was exceedingly pious, asked God to make known to her what displeased His Divine Majesty most in persons of her sex. The Lord vouchsafed in a miraculous manner to hear her. He opened under her eyes the Eternal Abyss. There she saw a woman a prey to cruel torments and in her recognized one of her friends, a short time before deceased. This sight caused her as much astonishment as grief: the person whom she saw damned did not seem to her to have lived badly. Then that unhappy soul said to her: “It is true that I practiced religion, but I was a slave of vanity. Ruled by the passion to please, I was not afraid to adopt indecent fashions to attract attention, and I kindled the fire of impurity in more than one heart. Ah! If Christian women knew how much immodesty in dress displeases God!” At the same moment, this unhappy soul was pierced by two fiery lances, and plunged into a cauldron of liquid lead.

Venerable Louis of Granada, OP

Louis of Granada speaks of a young woman whose damnation had no other source than vanity and the desire to please. She led a regular life, but her passion to attract attention by the charm of her beauty was the moving cause of her whole conduct. Having fallen sick, she died, having received all the Sacraments. While her confessor was praying for her soul, she appeared to him, saying that she was damned, and that the cause of her damnation was vanity. “I sought,” she added, “only to please the eyes of men. This passion caused me to commit a multitude of sins; it prevented me from receiving the Sacraments well, and it has led me to everlasting torments.”

Thomas of Cantimpre, a learned religious of the Order of St. Dominic, relates that there was at Brussels an unhappy sinner, the slave of intemperance and the other vices which it foments. He had a friend, the companion of his dissipation, to whom he was greatly attached. A sudden death put an end to his disorders. His sorrowful companion, after having accompanied him to the grave, had returned home and was alone in his chamber, when he heard moans underground. Frightened at first and not knowing what to do, he ventured at length to ask who it was that he heard moaning. “It is I, your companion, whose body you attended to the grave. Alas! My soul is buried in Hell.” Then, uttering a cry, or rather a dreadful roar, he added, “Woe to me! The abyss has swallowed me, and the pit has closed its mouth upon me.”

The Painter of the Immodest Picture

A true story of a soul whom was nearly damned because of painting an immodest picture; as told in the book “Purgatory” by Rev. F.X. Schouppe.

A painter of great skill and otherwise exemplary life

had once made a painting not at all conformable to the strict rules of Christian modesty. It was one of those paintings which, under the pretext of being works of art, are found in the best families, and the sight of which causes the loss of so many souls.

True art is an inspiration from Heaven, which elevates the soul to God ; profane art, which appeals to the senses only, which presents to the eye nothing but the beauties of flesh and blood, is but an inspiration of the evil spirit…

The artist of whom we speak had allowed himself to be misled in this point by bad example. Soon, however, renouncing this pernicious style, he confined himself to the production of religious pictures, or at least of those which were perfectly irreproachable. Finally, he was painting a large picture in the convent of the discalced Carmelites, when he was attacked by a mortal malady.

Feeling that he was about to die, he asked the Prior to allow him to be interred in the church of the monastery, and bequeathed to the community his earnings, which amounted to a considerable sum of money, charging them to have Masses said for the repose of his soul. He died in pious sentiments, and a few days passed, when a Religious who had stayed in the choir after Matins saw him appear in the midst of flames and sighing piteously.

” What ! ” said the Religious, ” have you to endure such pain, after leading so good a life and dying so holy a death ? ” ” Alas ! ” replied he, ” it is on account of the immodest picture that I painted some years ago. When I appeared before the tribunal of the Sovereign Judge, a crowd of accusers came to give evidence against me. They declared that they had been excited to improper thoughts and evil desires by a picture, the work of my hand. In consequence of those bad thoughts some were in Purgatory, others in Hell. The latter cried for vengeance,

Woe to the world because of scandals ! Woe to that man by whom the scandal cometh ! Scandal makes great ravages in souls by the seduction of innocence. Ah ! those accursed seducers ! They shall render to God a terrible account of the blood of their victims. saying that, having been the cause of their eternal perdition!

I deserved, at least, the same punishment. Then the Blessed Virgin and the saints whom I had glorified by my pictures took up my defense. They represented to the Judge that that unfortunate painting had been the work of youth, and of which I had repented ; that I had repaired it afterwards by religious objects which had been a source of edification to souls.

” In consideration of these and other reasons, the Sovereign Judge declared that, on account of my repentance and my good works, I should be exempt from damnation ; but at the same time, He condemned me to these flames until that picture should be burned, so that it could no longer scandalise any one.”

Then the poor sufferer implored the Religious to take measures to have the painting destroyed ” I beg of you,” he added, “go in my name to such a person, proprietor of the picture ; tell him in what a condition I am for having yielded to his entreaties to paint it, and conjure him to make a sacrifice of it. If he refuses, woe to him ! To prove that this is not an illusion, and to punish him for his own

fault, tell him that before long he will lose his two children. Should he refuse to obey Him who has created us both, he will pay for it by a premature death.”

The Religious delayed not to do what the poor soul asked of him, and went to the owner of the picture. The latter, on hearing these things, seized the painting and cast it into the fire. Nevertheless, according to the words of the deceased, he lost his two children in less than a month.

The remainder of his days he passed in penance, for having ordered and kept that immodest picture in his house.

If such are the consequences of an immodest picture, what, then, will be the punishment of the still more disastrous scandals resulting from bad books, bad papers, bad schools, and bad conversations? ” Woe to the world because of scandals ! Woe to that man by whom the scandal cometh !

Scandal makes great ravages in souls by the seduction of innocence. Ah ! those accursed seducers ! They shall render to God a terrible account of the blood of their victims.
